Four area wrestlers ranked in preseason poll

Four Jasper County wrestlers are ranked in the preseason wrestling poll released by The Predicament on Wednesday.

In Class 3A, Newton junior Evan Rethmeier is No. 9 at 171 pounds. Urbandale senior Michael Moreno is the top ranked wrestler at that weight.

For Class 3A as a whole, Waverly-Shell Rock is the top ranked team with eight ranked wrestlers and four Go-Hawk wrestlers at No. 1. Bettendorf and Iowa City West are second and third with 10 ranked wrestlers each.

In Class 2A, PCM sophomore Dalton Kingery is ranked No. 3 at 112 pounds after his third-place finish last season at 103. Senior Alex Spooner of Forest City is No. 1.

Also in Class 2A, CMB senior Zach Leonard is ranked No. 6 at heavyweight. Junior Austin Blythe of Williamsburg is No. 1.

Ballard is the top ranked team in Class 2A with five ranked wrestlers. The Bombers have four wrestlers ranked No. 1 at their individual weight classes — 140-pound junior Tanner Hiatt, 145-pound sophomore Willie Miklus, 152-pound junior Tanner Weatherman and 171-pound senior Brock Weatherman.

Denver-Tripoli comes in second with five ranked wrestlers, while Davenport Assumption at fourth has the most ranked wrestlers with seven.

In Class 1A, Lynnville-Sully junior Kyle Soderblom is ranked No. 4 at 189 pounds. Senior Taylor Kettman of Don Bosco is ranked No. 1 at that weight.

Don Bosco is the top team in Class 1A with a total of six ranked wrestlers. South Iowa Cedar League school Belle Plaine is ranked fourth with four top-10 teams. The Plainsmen will be led by 103-pound senior Zach Buch, who is ranked No. 1.

Eddyville-Blakesburg, who is in the same sectional as Lynnville-Sully and Colfax-Mingo, is ranked seventh with four individuals in the top-10.
