NORTH ENGLISH — Lynnville-Sully’s girls basketball team opened the season Friday night with a dominating 57-24 victory over English Valleys.
Tara Van Rees led the Class 1A No. 8 Hawks with 14 points, six steals and four assists, while Mariah Terlouw and Danielle Samson each added nine points. Caitlin Cross led the rebounding effort with seven boards.
The Hawks shot 46.7 percent from the field while holding the Bears to 25 percent shooting and 27 turnovers.
“We did a good job of playing team defense,” Lynnville-Sully coach Jerry Hulsing said. “We need to get better ball pressure at times. Offensively we were able to run the floor and move the ball to get some easy shots. It’s a good way to start the season.”
The Hawks struggled from the line, going just 12-of-27.
Lynnville-Sully jumped to a 14-5 lead after the first quarter and led 28-12 at halftime. The Hawks outscored English Valleys 29-12 in the second half.
Lynnville-Sully (1-0) is back in action Tuesday night at home against BGM, who opened up the season with a 39-32 win over Keota.
