How much progess have we made?

To the Editor,

... Do you ever wonder what meaningful progress we have made over the last 200 years? ... If memory serves me correctly, our beloved George Washington was bled to death by his doctors in trying to heal him. So at least in the medical field we have progressed in leaps and bounds, yet very expensive. I do ponder as to what other progress we have experienced with our political parties as to serving the people.

The drafters of our Constitution did so with our George Washington and the people of America in mind. I cannot help but wonder what our lawmakers have in their minds today. Our leaders of today seem to work toward the good of the parties and special interest groups, rather than what is proper for our country and new generations to come. I also wonder what do the special interest groups or lobbyists do for “We the people!” Are the lobbyists for unions, insurance companies, factories, nursing homes, medical fields, and many more looking out for the people’s best interest?

It is a fact we need our lawmakers and leaders. It is also true that we need the rich and powerful to create jobs. However, without the little people (you and I) working for wages, our country could disappear. Of course there are countries surviving under the rules of dictatorships. Those countries are greeting our once American manufacturing companies with open arms. The people in those countries are happy to receive low wages, no medical Insurance, no OSHA, nor workman’s compensation. Do we the little people of America expect too much? Or is this just the law of the jungle and the way the cookie crumbles?

It is not funny, but it is a fact some people within our society and political parties are using the words Democrat or Republican like cuss words toward each other. Do you think name calling was worse 200 years ago? It no doubt was! We have wars in history to prove that.
