Charles Winter Burkland, 93, of Newton died on Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with interment on Wednesday at the Graceland Cemetery in Creston, Iowa.

Charles Winter Burkland, the son of O. F. & Elizabeth (Winter) Burkland, was born on May 7, 1916, in Creston, Iowa. He graduated from Creston Senior High School and went on to receive a degree in engineering from Iowa State University.

On Dec. 18, 1940, Charles was united in marriage with Arlenna Lucille Anderson in Creston. He was a devoted husband and father to his son, daughter and family. He and Arlenna moved to Newton in 1946. Charlie retired from Maytag Research & Development at the age of 70 in 1986, with 37 years of service. Prior to Maytag, he was employed in the aircraft industry as an aeronautical engineer with Curtis Wright-McDonnell Douglas.

He is survived by his son, Bruce Tracy (Cheryl) Burkland of Prairie City; his daughter, Sharon (Steve) Atwood of Baxter; four grandchildren, Carey Gorham, Teresa (Brad) Arrowood, Edie (Mike) Hatcher and Stacie (Damon) Madole; and his nine great-grandchildren.

His life could be summed up as “somebody you could count on.”
