A movie shot in Newton in August is one step closer to being released.

Film producers for the movie “Underground” have released a trailer for the horror film, which was shot at the former Maytag Plant 2 factory.

The former factory is featured prominently in the film trailer as is Newton’s Mayor Chaz Allen who got a speaking part as Marine Special Forces Lt. Dover.

Allen’s face is the first thing people see when the trailer begins.

“I thought I’d be cropped out entirely,” he said today after viewing the trailer. “I thought I’d be snipped out and left on the cutting room floor.”

Allen was pleasantly surprised to make the final cut and to be featured in the film.

“It’s exciting,” he said. “I just watched it and it looks horrible as far as being a horror flick.”

The film crew shot most of the scenes in the former factory along with other locations in Jasper County.

Allen said it is amazing to see the former Maytag Plant take on new life.

“It’s amazing it’s a set of a movie now,” he said. “I looked at it knowing the places the scenes were in like sheet metal and the people that worked there will also know it as well.”

“Underground” stars Ross Thomas, Adrian R’Mante and Sofia Pernas, who have all been temporarily living in Newton during the shooting of the film.

Along with the stars of the film, some Newton residents got a chance to take part in a rave scene that cast 400 extras. The scene shot on Aug. 6 at Maytag Plant 2.
