More Jasper County vets will make Honor Flight
With the success of the Honor Flight program to take World War II veterans to Washington D.C. to view the new memorial last summer, interest is still high in Jasper County for additional veterans to make the trip.
Doug Bishop has been acting as liaison between Jasper County WWII veterans who wish to make the trip, and the Honor Flight headquarters in Council Bluffs. A total of 15 veterans from Jasper County made the trip to the nation’s capital in August, and Bishop has signed up an additional 14 that will be making the next flight on Oct. 13.
Those WWII veterans traveling this time include Paul Doran, George Kling, Leland Lester, Frances O’Roake, Bill Remington, Norm Ringgenberg, Paul Rose, John Schermerhorn, Fred Swank, Dean Ward, Marvin Weeks, Daryle Whalen, Wendell Huff, all from Newton, and Leonard Lingenfelter from Monroe.
To honor our county veterans, Bishop and the American Legion in Newton will be serving a dinner to the vets this evening at 5:30 p.m. Following the dinner at 6 p.m. the Legion will be open to the public to greet the veterans.
Bishop said he already had about a dozen more veterans who are planning to make the next Honor Flight in November. Any World War II veteran in Jasper County who would like to make the next Honor Flight can contact Bishop at 641-417-8885.
