Dan Skokan, president of The Jasper Community Foundation announced earlier this week that 16 area non-profit organizations received grants this year through the state-sponsored County Endowment Program.

A total of 25 proposals were received from educational, municipal and non-profit organizations throughout Jasper County.

“I am pleased to announce that the Foundation awarded $92,075 in 2009 grants,” Skokan said. “We are fortunate to have these funds available to help Jasper County charitable organizations in these difficult economic times. Each year we see more need and interest in the program.”

The Foundation awarded grants ranging from $500 to $10,000 to new or enhanced, innovative programs that address needs or issues within Jasper County.

All submitted grant proposals were reviewed by the Jasper Community Foundation Board.

The 16 organizations receiving funding through this program are:

• Monroe Recreation Park—Capital support

• Monroe Public Library — Improvement project

• Jasper County Animal Rescue League — Replace kennel fronts and gates

• Jasper County Conservation — New recreational equipment

• Project Awake (2) — Fence project and to erect a Knot Garden

• Baxter Community Schools — Playground project

• Friends of Prairie City Library — Tote Bag program

• YMCA — Scholarships

• United Way of Jasper County — County wide health and human services needs assessment

• Retired Seniors Volunteer Program — RIDE program

• Wesley Willowbrook Adult Day Services — New exercise equipment

• Colfax-Mingo Music Boosters — New choral risers and sound shells

• Peck Child Development Center — Renovation project

• Clearview Recovery Center — Center upgrades

• Newton Public Library — 2010 Summer Reading program

• Progress Industries Foundation — Shelter house and landscaping project

The County Endowment Fund made the funds for these grants possible. This Fund was established by the state legislature in 2004 to help promote charitable giving and philanthropy within the state.

The amounts allocated to each county are awarded to a qualified Community Foundation for distribution. In a press release last week Governor Culver announced that the Jasper Community Foundation will receive $129,000 this year for the program.

Of that amount 25 percent is required to remain in a permanent endowment fund and 75 percent granted to charitable projects in the county.
