Additional state fair winners announced

Here are more results of Jasper County residents in competition at the 2009 Iowa State Fair:

• Margot VanHouweling’s llamas, Sleepy Hollow’s Jellie (Bean) and her first offspring, Jellie’s Jem, both stood first in their respective halter classes at the Iowa State Fair Llama Show. VanHouweling’s llama Freedom of Pinewood received a third place, and she placed fourth in Senior Showmanship. In addition to her showing efforts, as the 2008 Iowa State Fair Llama Queen, VanHouweling had the honor of passing on her duties to the new Llama Royalty Court. Her reign concluded with passing the baton during a crowning ceremony. VanHouweling (pictured above) is the daughter of Mark and Cheryl VanHouweling of rural Prairie City.

• Kalyn Halferty (top right), member of the Colfax-Mingo FFA Chapter and a student at Northwest Missouri State, received Grand Champion Hampshire Ewe, Supreme Hampshire Breed with her yearling Hampshire Ewe and Showmanship. Colfax-Mingo FFA Chapter also received the Supreme Breeding Sheep Chapter award.

• Jacob Halferty (top left), member of the Colfax-Mingo FFA Chapter and a sophomore at Colfax-Mingo High School, received Reserve Champion Hampshire Ewe with his Yearling Hampshire Ewe and Reserve Champion Hampshire Ram.

• Brice Conover of Baxter showed the Champion Boar at the Berkshire Swine Show at the Iowa State Fair. Conover also placed second in the Berkshire Gilts category. AJC Berks & Cardinal Berks of Baxter placed fifth in the Berkshire Gilts category.

• Clayton Weltha of Baxter placed third and fourth in the purebred Southdown category in the Jackpot Lamb show judged Aug. 23 at the Iowa State Fair.

• JVM Cattle Company of Sully took the Iowa Champion Bull honors at the Iowa State Fair South Devon Show. JVM also placed first in Heifers — March 1-31, 2009; first in Heifers — April 1-30, 2009; first in Bulls — Jan. 1-Feb. 28, 2009; Champion Bull Calf and Reserve Champion Junior Heifer Calf.

• ML Lewis Charolais of Monroe earned the Reserve Grand Champion Female title in the Charolais Cattle Show at the Iowa State Fair. Cannon Farm of Newton showed the Iowa Champion Female. John and Ethan Dodge of Newton placed fifth in the Junior Bull Calves, Jan. 1 to Feb. 28 category.
