Area residents take awards in Iowa State Fair contests
FFA members from across Iowa earned championship honors in the FFA Breeding Sheep Show at the 2009 Iowa State Fair.
Breed division winners in the FFA Breeding Sheep Show included Logan Wilson of Colfax for Champion Hampshire Ram, Champion Dorset Ram, Champion Dorset Ewe and Reserve Champion Dorset Ewe; Jacob Halferty of Colfax for Reserve Champion Hampshire Ram and Reserve Champion Hampshire Ewe; and Kalyn Halferty of Colfax for Champion Hampshire Ewe.

Woodcarvers from across the state whittled their way into the woodcarving contest judged prior to opening day of the 2009 Iowa State Fair. Both amateur and professional carvers’ work was eligible for the contest. All carvings were required to have been made by the exhibitor, with no machine created work. Dennis Evans of Newton won second place in the chip carving category, second place in the decorated functional category and second and third place in the Christmas ornaments category.

Fairgoers and judges saw double and triple at the annual Twins, Triplets and More contest at the 2009 Iowa State Fair. Local winners in the Most Alike category for those age 2 included Gavin and Brevin DeRaad of Prairie City, taking first place. Luke and Elise Nikkel of Newton took third place in the age 2 Least Alike category, and Cael and Marissa Bracewell of Colfax won third place in the age 3 Least Alike category.

Local winners in the 2009 Iowa State Fair’s Best Bakers Topple Competition included Phyllis Olson of Newton in third place for two layer bars, second place for peanut butter bars, second place for molasses, second place for filled cookies and third place for snowballs. Olson also won second place with Swedish butter balls in the Scandinavian Desserts competition and third place for Green & Delicious entrees or desserts in the St. Patrick’s Day Treats competition.
In the 2009 Iowa State Fair’s Make It with Lard competition, Olson won second place in the pie crust category.

Joanne Thomason of Newton won third place in the mat size 5 cut or larger category in the 2009 Iowa State Fair’s Fabric and Threads Hooked Rugs contest. Susan Bryan of Newton won third place in the Standard size 5 cut or larger category, Liala Ralph of Newton won third place in the small pieces category and Bryan won fourth place in the small pieces category. Thomason also won second place in the originals or adaptations category.

Local winners in the 2009 Iowa State Fair Fabric and Threads Crochet contest included Eileen Faux of Mingo for third place in the Afghan (granny squares, block pattern & assembly) category.

Local winners in the 2009 Iowa State Fair Fabric and Threads Counted Thread Techniques contest included Marilyn Samson of Prairie City in first place for Swedish Weaving — Afghan.
