Food-4-Fines drive begins Aug. 24
Food-4-Fines Drive
The 2009 Back to School Food-4-Fines drive will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, and end at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29.
Each non-perishable food item donated to the library in lieu of fines will be given to the Jasper Community Food Pantry.
One food item will equal up to $1 in fines. Two food items equal up to $2, etc. This program does not affect charges assessed for lost/damaged materials or recovery fees.
Donated items must be within their “best by” or “use by” dates. You don’t have to have a fine to donate, so dig into your cupboard to help those in need!
Summer Reading Wrap Up
What a great year the library had for the Summer Reading program ... over 500 kids registered for the program. Children and teens may still turn in book logs and receive a coupon for a free kids’ meal from Culver’s restaurant while supplies last. The library would like to thank the local businesses who supported the program.
A HUGE thank you to Scott Creech at Domino’s for donating 49 pizzas for our pizza and pool party at Maytag Pool on July 31!
Thanks to the Newton Hy-Vee for providing hotdogs and buns for our kick-off registration picnic.
Thank you to Culver’s Restaurant of Newton for donating a free kids’ meal to all the children who complete the summer reading program and to McDonald’s who provided certificates for a free hamburger to all children who registered for summer reading. McDonalds also sponsored a free magic show by Ronald McDonald.
Finally, thank you to the Blank Park Zoo for donating 500 free children’s admission tickets to the zoo.
These organizations and individuals donated their time and expertise to provide free programs for Newton Public Library patrons: Chris Noel taught a beaded bracelet and beaded key chain workshop, Stephanie Sanders led a creative writing workshop, and the Jasper County Conservation Board provided a program about how animals creatively use camouflage. The Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge in Prairie City presented a program about prairie restoration.
Iowa Public Television provided a free program with IPTV kid’s host Dan Wardell. Author Dennis Weidemann shared his youthful experiences rafting north and signed books. Deana Gast taught a scrapbooking 101 class. Iowa author Kylie Brant offered advice to budding authors and signed her latest book.
Congratulations to Kaytlynn Hughes who was the winner of a Kirby Kangaroo Club prize $25 savings account, donated by Advantage Credit Union.
