Four apply for council seat
Four candidates have submitted their names to fill the open at-large council seat created by the death of Ron Foreman.
Raymond Sutton, Richard Atwood, Sheri Benson and James Klier each have applied for the position, which Newton City Council plans to fill by appointment. Whoever is appointed to the post will face re-election this coming fall.
The League of Women voters is sponsoring a public forum for the the candidates at 7 p.m. on July 28 in city council chambers. The public can attend and participate in the forum, which will include statements from each applicant and a question and answer period with questions submitted by the community.
During discussion on the matter following Foreman’s death, council members indicated that they would appoint the position at the Aug. 3 council meeting.
Potential candidates have until July 24 at 4:30 p.m. to submit their names to city hall.
