L-S baseball team splits doubleheader
SULLY — Lynnville-Sully’s baseball team split a pair of games with HLV on Wednesday, losing the first game by a 17-8 score and coming back with a 10-0 win in five innings.
The first game, a 17-8 loss, was the start of a previously rained out game. The game started with HLV leading 7-2 going into the top of the third inning as the Hawks were the road team.
Lynnville-Sully came right out with six runs in the third inning, but that lead would be short-lived. After HLV took the lead back, the Warriors expanded the lead late in the game.
“The wheels just fell off the wagon with hits, errors and lots of walks in the sixth inning,” Lynnville-Sully coach Nick Harder said. “They scored eight in the sixth inning.”
Zach Stafford took the loss on the mound for the Hawks after allowing six hits, 14 walks and striking out six.
Nick Beyer led the team offensively by going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Stafford was 2-for-3 with a double, while Bryce Doane had a hit, scored two runs, was hit by two pitches and stole two bases.
Kenton Dunsbergen added a double and two RBIs, while Dallas Bryan had an RBI.
In the second game, Lynnville-Sully needed just five innings to come away with a 10-0 victory over the Warriors.
Freshman Blake Dunsbergen came away with the win after allowing two hits and two walks.
The Hawks scored two runs in the first, three in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth to come away with the victory.
Kenton Dunsbergen led the team by going 4-for-4 with a run scored, a double and three RBIs.
Jesse Holder was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Beyer was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a stolen base.
Dallas Bryan also was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
“This was a pretty solid performance,” Harder said. “It was the first start on the mound for Blake, and he did a pretty good job.”
Lynnville-Sully (8-9, 8-6 SICL) is back in action tonight at home against English Valleys.
SFlbPCM starts week
with three losses
The start of this week has not been good for the PCM baseball team. The result has been three losses.
On Tuesday night, the Mustangs lost a 19-7 decision to Carlisle.
“Carlisle is a very good hitting team, so we knew it would be a difficult game,” PCM coach Kelly Kain said. “With five games this week, we knew we would have to be creative with our pitching staff and against a team like Carlisle, it proved to be difficult.”
On Monday, PCM started the day with an afternoon makeup game at Gilbert. The Mustangs lost by a 13-3 score in six innings.
“We made a little run in the middle of the game and cut their lead down to two, but then gave it right back in the bottom of the inning,” Kain said. “We just didn’t play very well against Gilbert.”
Joe Gilson took the loss on the mound against Gilbert. Offensively, Drew Vander Beek was 3-for-3.
In the second game on Monday, Roland-Story came away with a 6-5 eight-inning win over PCM in Story City.
Gunner Wyatt had a two-out walk off home run in the eighth inning to give the Norsemen a win.
Kurt Timmons and Hutch Burns pitched for the Mustangs.
Offensively, Gavin Burns went 3-for-4, Bo Clymer was 2-for-4 with a double and Vander Beek added two more hits.
“We spotted Roland-Story four unearned runs in the first couple innings,” Kain said. “We had some timely hitting in the later innings to come back and tie the game and send it into extra innings.”
PCM (8-8, 6-6 HOIC) is back in action tonight at Jefferson-Scranton.
Raiders fall to
North Polk, Ballard
The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter baseball team went 1-3 in its last four games recently as the Raiders lost to North Polk, Ballard and conference-leading Gilbert before taking down Bondurant-Farrar on Monday.
Before CMB’s 7-4 win over the Bluejays, the Raiders lost to North Polk, 10-6, and were defeated by Ballard, 2-1, last week.
Against North Polk, which CMB defeated at home this season, the Raiders collected eight hits and waked four times but had trouble slowing down the Comets’ offense.
Leading the Raiders offensively was Parker Murphy, who had two hits and one walk at the dish. Michael Gander added a solo home run, two runs scored, one walk and one stolen base.
Dylan Hansen and Josh Benton also scored two runs and had two stolen bases each. Zach Leonard had an RBI double as well.
Taking the loss on the mound was Gander as he was chased in the third inning. Hansen threw the final four innings in relief and gave up eight htis.
Benton went the distance on the mound for CMB against Ballard last Thursday, but the Raiders’ offense couldn’t muster up much offense in the loss.
Benton allowed one earned run on three hits while striking out two in the loss.
Marcus Schmidt had one hit and walked once to lead the offense.
Hansen added a hit and a stolen base. CMB had just six hits in the game and walked twice.
Information on the Gilbert loss and Bondurant-Farrar win was not available at press time.
The Raiders are now 5-11 overall and 3-8 in the Heart of Iowa Athletic Conference. They host Madrid tonight in Collins beginning at 5:30 p.m.
