L-S girls win third straight
MONTEZUMA — Lynnville-Sully outscored Montezuma 12-5 in the fourth quarter to pull out a 44-40 victory Tuesday night in girls basketball play. “I am very happy with how hard the girls played for the whole game,” Lynnville-Sully coach Jerry Hulsing said. “We struggled in the middle part of the game but kept battling for 32 minutes and pulled it out in the last two minutes of the game. We hit some key free throws down the stretch to secure the win.” Danielle Samson had another solid game for the Hawks (8-2, 8-1) as she collected 15 points and 12 rebounds. Cyvannah Doll added nine points for Lynnville-Sully. The Hawks shot just 37.8 percent for the game but were helped by a 31-22 advantage on the boards and shot 17 more free throws than Montezuma.
Hawks withstand rally by Montezuma boys MONTEZUMA — Nick Beyer scored 13 points and Lynnville-Sully held on for a 51-42 victory over Montezuma on Tuesday night. “Montezuma battled us tough,” Lynnville-Sully boys basketball coach Nick Harthoorn said. “The boys were able to answer the call whenever Montezuma made a run. We had guys step in off the bench and really contribute to this win.” The Hawks (6-2, 5-2) were able to get 14 points off the bench, along with making 16-of-22 free throws. For the game, Lynnville-Sully was just 40.5 percent on field goal shooting while holding Montezuma to just 29.2 percent. Dallas Bryan added nine points in the win while Corey Gifford collected a team-leading seven rebounds. Danny Zegers also dished out a team-leading five assists.
Raiders split home double dual MAXWELL — The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter wrestling team split a double dual in Maxwell on Tuesday, besting North Polk, 45-32, and losing to Roland-Story, 42-30. On the night, Jayme O’Hara, Jordan Jones, David Kolpin, Tyler Rucker and Royal Mansfield all won two matches, while Nate Peters, Austin Page, Ben Garrison and Zach Leonard all record one win. “We had a chance to win two meets tonight but settled for the split,” CMB coach Troy Houge said. “I thought we had a chance to beat Roland-Story, but they were able to get wins in matches I thought were toss-up matches. That was the difference in the meet.”
Tigerhawks swept in double dual COLFAX — Colfax-Mingo dropped a pair of conference wrestling duals Tuesday night to Ogden and Gilbert. Ogden won 50-28 over Colfax-Mingo while Gilbert came away with a 54-28 victory. The Tigerhawks held a 28-27 lead over Ogden late in the dual but couldn’t gain the necessary wins late. Three Colfax-Mingo wrestlers went 2-0 Tuesday, with 119-pounder Justis Robson gaining a major decision and pin while Austin Poulter earned a fall and decision at 145. Shadow Ross also was able to grab a pair of pins at 160. Justin Fisher gained a pin at 112 in the dual against Ogden while Jeff Lamb earned a pin at 135 against Gilbert. “We battled tonight,” Colfax-Mingo wrestling coach Bryan Poulter said. “We did not necessarily win the battles, but we did battle. “We’re so young and inexperienced in so many varsity spots, it’s important that our wrestlers continue to work hard.”
