Dog First Aid class scheduled at JCARL
In conjunction with Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month this month, the Jasper County Animal Rescue League and Humane Society is offering a first aid class for local dog owners. Staff members at the rescue league care for more than 1,500 animals each year. Whether they have arrived as strays from one of the 10 cities or from the rural areas of the county where the shelter provides animal control services, the rescue league staff strives to find each one a forever home. Pets at the rescue league rely on the staff for their well-being and safety. In addition to providing daily care, love and discipline, pets also rely on staff in the event of an emergency. With that in mind, the Jasper County Animal Rescue League is sponsoring a Dog First Aid Class on Thursday, Oct. 9, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the rescue league, which is located at 5411 Liberty Ave. The class, conducted by authorized American Red Cross Pet First Aid instructors, is $40 per person and includes a book and DVD. Learn basic information about how to recognize and care for canine emergencies, illness and injuries. Skills include rescue breathing, CPR and care for choking pets as well as first aid techniques for treating shock, bleeding, fractures, poisoning and illness. For more information or to pre-register, call the Iowa Rivers Chapter of the American Red Cross toll-free at 1-877-792-3808 ext. 8 or the Jasper County Animal Rescue League at 792-5407.
