BROOKLYN — The Lynnville-Sully cross country teams showed continued improvement Monday in a meet at the Brooklyn Country Club. The L-S girls took second with 58 points, while Gladbrook Reinbeck won with 50. The L-S boys took third with 92 points. Belle Plaine won with 41 points, while host BGM was second with 83. Mariah Terlouw led the girls with a time of 17:52, good for fourth. Other scorers were Cassie Schwartz (19:31, 10th), Carly Van Wyk (19:37, 11th), Kelsi Vanden Hoek (20:05, 16th) and Maddi Jansen (20:33, 17th). “The girls’ team finished second by just eight points and beat Belle Plaine by 16, who just last week beat us by 21,” L-S coach Darin Arkema said. “All of the girls got behind the idea that if a Gladbrook or Belle Plaine jersey was in front of them, to do everything they could to pass them.” The L-S boys were led by Andy Sneller, who was fifth with a time of 19:34. “Andy Sneller had his best race of his high school career finishing fifth, just a few inches from fourth,” Arkema said. “I know he was set on running well tonight, and he came through in a big way.” Other boys scoring for the Hawks were Bill Trettin (21:42, 18th), Sam Wenndt (22:37, 22nd), Nick Rozendaal (23:32, 23rd) and Robbie Guthrie (23:35, 24th). “All the guys just crushed their times on this course from last year, which shows me we are physically much stronger and better conditioned than a year ago,” Arkema said. The coach noted the Brooklyn meet has traditionally been tough due to the layout of the course. “This course has the single largest hill we run on, which can be pretty intimidating at first sight,” Arkema said. “Tonight, I felt our kids conquered the mental aspect of this meet better than teams I’ve coached in the past.” The L-S cross country teams next compete Thursday in the Mustang Invite at Gateway Recreation Golf Course in Monroe.

L-S volleyball gets first win over weekend The Hawk volleyball team picked up its first win of 2008 over the weekend, before falling again Monday night. L-S traveled to North English Monday to take on English Valleys and came up on the short end of a 3-0 South Iowa Cedar League sweep. English Valleys won 25-16, 27-25, 25-19. Tonya De Cook led the Hawks with six kills and Tessa Engle added five kills. Josie Morris had 15 digs and 13 assists. Katelyn Van Wyk had two aces while Tara Van Rees had one. “It’s another tough loss for the Hawks,” coach Al Hodgeman said. “We came out very slow in the first game and a half, and then it’s tough to dig your way out of a hole. We had game point, 24-23 in Game 2, but couldn’t close the deal. If we win the second game, that turns the match around.” Hodgeman gave credit to the Bears. “English Valleys was very scrappy and returned a lot of balls that we weren’t ready for on defense,” Hodgeman said. “We need to improve our ability to read and react on defense to any ball.” On Saturday, the L-S volleyball team traveled to New Sharon for North Mahaska’s tournament. Tri-County knocked off L-S 21-12, 18-21, 15-13 to start the day. Engle had five kills for the Hawks, while Van Rees had 14 digs. Morris had an ace. North Mahaska swept L-S 2-0, with scores of 21-12 and 21-14. Van Rees led with five kills, while De Cook had two kills and six digs. Van Wyk had seven digs. The Hawks wrapped up their day by getting their first win of the year, a 2-0 sweep (21-11, 21-12) over HLV. De Cook had five kills and two aces. Van Rees also had five kills, while Engle had three aces and Brooke Van Soelen had eight digs. “The girls got their first win of the season on Saturday versus a tough HLV team,” Hodgeman said. “The team was optimistic, helpful and upbeat all day, and we played hard every match. It was good to see the girls get their first win.” L-S (1-9) hosts Sigourney Wednesday in Sully. Varsity action tips off at about 7:15 p.m.
