The Iowa State Patrol has released additional information concerning the two-vehicle accident one mile north of Monroe on Wednesday morning. According to Iowa State Patrol crash report, Krystal Marie Egland, 24, of Monroe was northbound on Highway 14 in a Dodge Durango at 6:48 a.m. when she lost control of her vehicle near Runner Avenue, entered the southbound lane and was struck broadside by a Pontiac Sunfire driven by 16-year-old Erin North of Monroe. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts. Egland was transported by Life Flight to Iowa Methodist Medical Center where she is listed in serious condition this morning, however her unborn child was killed in the accident. North was transported to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines by Air Life. Her condition is unknown at this time. Both vehicles were totaled in the accident. Iowa State Patrol trooper Marc Griggs speculated that the icy conditions on Highway 14 Wednesday morning, as well as the lack of tread on the Durango’s tires may have played a part in the accident.
